The American Diploma Project (ADP), a partnership of four national
organizations and five states, is a collaborative effort to ensure
that American high school students have the knowledge and skills
necessary for success following graduation, whether in college,
the workplace or the armed services. Launched in 2001 with funding
from The Hewlitt Foundation, the organizations—Achieve,
Inc.; The Education Trust; The Fordham Foundation and The National
Alliance of Business—have worked with Indiana, Kentucky,
Massachusetts, Nevada and Texas to build constituencies and develop
policies to support a coherent K-16 system.
ADP has just published a set of end-of-high school benchmarks that integrate the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the workplace. The project has also collected work samples from the workplace as well as freshman college courses that show the benchmarks in action.

The Finance Project seeks to improve policymaking strategies aimed

In 2001, Just for the Kids, the University of Texas at Austin,
and the Education Commission of the States (ECS), an interstate
compact that helps state policymakers shape education policies,
joined together to form a National Center for Educational Accountability.
This collaboration brings together a proven educational accountability
reporting and research model, the research strengths of a major
university, and policy information and state education leaders
from across the country. The National Center will focus on using
academic performance data to identify best practices in state
and local educational accountability systems; developing research
on best practices of high-performing districts, schools and classrooms;
and translating best practices research into cutting-edge resources
and policy models available to state leaders for implementation.

The National Commission on Teaching & America’s Future
(NCTAF) was begun in 1994 as a bipartisan blue-ribbon panel with

in five broad and interlocking areas. Since 1996, the Commission
has been supported to work on promoting these recommendations
